Despite its somewhat misleading title BARBARIAN is a wonderful thrill-ride of a horror flick! Big thanks for bringing this to our attention, Scorp!
The director skilfully plays with our expectations and comes up with a coulpe of interesting surprises. The level of horror is rising continuously until the end and also includes some “nice” gore effects.
Yet, this is not some dumb horror flick. The movie offers some interesting topics for those in the audience who like to think about the horrors in our daily lives and society’s developments.
Aspects featured here range from the dangers of staying at strange houses, the decline of neighborhoods, lost places right in big cities, alien subcultures, the me-too-discourse, the power-relations of men and women, and our superficial evaluation of other people … often enough the real monsters aren’t the ugly looking folk … and even an ugly duckling can have a big heart …
If you’re in to horror, like to explore hidden and lost places and can enjoy thinking about what horror tells us about ourselves, well, then this film is for you. I highly recommend it. Enjoy 😉
